At Dow Terneuzen, an aerated reed bed, installed by Rietland, was tested for several years to purify WWTP effluent. The aim was to increase the quality of the effluent in such a way that the subsequent membrane installation would function better. Extensive tests were carried out in collaboration with Ghent University and Evides industrial water, which gave very promising results. A reason for Dow to consider scaling up to a system of more than 3 ha!
