The Lelystad Airport Businesspark project includes an advanced water purification system that purifies 150m³/d. It is designed to realize optimal water reuse and save energy.
The waste water from the industrial estate with hotel is supplied separately via a vacuum sewer system, after which the grey water is purified by a Phytoair of 500m² of Rietland. Part of the purified wastewater is upgraded to fire-fighting water by nanofiltration and UV/H202 oxidation by Jotem Water Solutions. The concentrate of the membrane filtration is mixed with the influent of the reed field and purified again. The rest of the purified grey wastewater goes to the surface water.
One of the challenges in membrane filtration is biofouling on the membranes, which reduces the purification efficiency of the system. The Phytoair system helps to prevent this biofilm in part because it removes the nutrients in the wastewater flow to be purified as a pre-purification. This aerated reed bed is better able than industrial techniques to remove low pollution concentrations that still cause biofouling on membranes. The Phytoair is therefore an excellent alternative as a pre-purification.
